confused

I am so confused...I met the most amazing young lady a few weeks ago. She is funny, bright, witty and so full of love to give...to give to a father that is no longer the man she once new and loved. Why is he no longer the same you ask? Several things....addiction and a horrific accident in which he suffered a horrible head injury. He should have died and in many ways, he did, at least to the daughter that loves and so desperately needs him. He is no longer the loving, caring, gentle man he once was, but a mean, spiteful and vindictive man. He has pushed away a wonderful young lady and all she can feel is guilt and remorse for what she may have done. Did she do anything....no, absolutely not! Where do I fit into this equation...this young lady could have very well been my daughter. No, she's not my daughter and she has no biological relationship to me, but I would claim her any day of the week and twice on Sunday's. It is heart wrenching to see the pain in her eyes and feel the sorrow in her heart and know that there is nothing I can do , except be there for her and hope that anyone that wonders why, will just not worry about it, it's mine and her business.
